Have you ever been the recipient of an act of kindness that made you feel blessed? Sometimes, this happens at the most unexpected times when you are feeling really down and one simple act of kindness can set things right for you. They say one kind act can lead to a lot of goodwill and this general feeling of happiness can really spread.
We cannot claim to come up with wise things like important life lessons from Dalai Lama, but we can relate to you a simple incident about how the chain of kindness can be started by anyone.
Since this is a life incident that happened to me and could happen to anyone, we are sure you will be able to relate to it.
Here Is How It All Got Started:
It was a normal Monday morning; I was running late as usual having managed to press the snooze button on the alarm clock three times (we all do that someday or the other). I could see the direct bus that I took on a daily basis leaving the bus stand even as I stumbled and fell as the strap of my shoe broke.
I cursed, picked myself up and looked around for some help. At that point, I would have gladly sat down and cried. Even as I dusted myself off and tried to rack my brains to come up with a plan on how to reach office without becoming too late, I could see clouds gathering on the horizon. “Oh that’s all I need!” I thought to myself. Late, broken footwear and now the prospect of getting drenched, what else could go wrong?
Even as that thought popped into my head, I could see Alan who was kind of a rival at office, driving down in his car. I had always found myself getting irritated when Alan spoke and always felt that he looked down upon the rest of us. The moment I noticed that he had spotted me, I could feel myself blushing and look embarrassed. Just as I thought, he stopped the car and I was sure that he would say something snooty and make fun of me.
However, to my surprise, he looked genuinely concerned and the first words out of his mouth were “Oh! Are you hurt? What happened? Can I help you in some way?” I narrated my woes and when I concluded, he simply said “Why don’t I give you a lift?” and when he saw me hesitate, he said “ I know we are not friends, but I promise not to bite” After that I felt it would be churlish to refuse and I accepted the lift he offered.
As soon as I got into the car, I was relieved to see that the interior was toasty warm and Alan even offered me some coffee. On the way to office, he insisted on stopping at a footwear shop so that I could replace my footwear. Revived by the warm ride, the hot coffee and relieved at the footwear replacement, I found myself genuinely smiling at him when he dropped me off.
That day I smiled at the receptionist at the office, I found myself humming as I worked, I even smiled at the girl who stood behind the cafeteria counter. Soon, I could notice more smiles around me. The mood seemed to be more ebullient on the whole. By the time it was time for the weekly meeting, I was in a really good mood. I found myself preparing for the meeting with an upbeat mood.
We all stepped into the meeting room; I could see Alan was already there. I found myself smiling and waving at him. When each of us was called upon to present our weekly statistics, I found myself listening intently to what Alan had to say. As I listened to him, I realized that what I thought of as his snooty attitude was actually a cover up for the fact that he was really shy. I smiled encouragingly and even helped him out on a couple of points during his presentation. At the end of the meeting, the boss looked at both of us and remarked that it was good to see both of us working together instead of being at odds with each other.
I walked out feeling ebullient and as I left office, I found myself smiling at everyone. I even smiled at the old woman who took a lot of time to pay for her ticket and offered her some change so that she could pay for the ticket. She smiled at me and patted my hand. I even chatted with people around and made some jokes in the bus and made people laugh.
As I walked back home from the bus stop I realized that the simple act of kindness that Alan had bestowed upon me had not only changed my whole day but had also made me lift other people’s moods. That day I decided that I will make it a point to be kind to at least one person during the day so that the chain of kindness would spread.
